        John received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1968. After serving as a Naval Aviator in the Marine Corps he moved to Monterrey, N.L., in northern Mexico.

        John joined The American Legion (Monterrey Post 5) the day after he left the Marine Corps. He became a member of the Department Executive Committee on his election as Post Commander in 1974 and has remained a member continuously since that time. After serving as Sgt. at Arms, Chaplain, Judge Advocate, 2nd Vice Commander, and 1st Vice Commander, during the Legion year 1984-85 he served the Department as Commander. Following his period as Commander, John has held two other elective Department positions: Chaplain in 1987-88 and Finance Officer from 2000 to the present. He is also Ye Webmaster for this site.

         In 1987 he was elected Alternate N.E.C. in a special election. Since that time he has served the Department as Alterante NEC during the periods 1987-90, 92-94, & 96-98 and he has been N.E.C. during the years 1994-96 & 98-present.

         Since coming to Mexico, John has worked as an engineer manufacturing heavy duty cranes and hoists, as an engineering design consultant, and is presently active in the field of acuaculture. During the 1980s, he "read for orders" in the Episcopal Church and in 1987 he was ordained. He has served congregations in Monterrey, Cancún, and Mérida as a non-remunerated priest. He has served a number of years as a member of his diocesan Standing Committee and served nine years on the the National Executive Council of the Anglican Church of Mexico (its governing body ).

         Besides his American Legion and church work in Cancún and Mérida, Father Hayes is a Past President of the Cancun Rotary Club.
