January Column:

My fellow legionnaires,

This month I would like to share with you an e-mail that I received from Post #3 Commander Clay Johnston, I have edited it.

The Internet is a main source of information for many persons. The American Legion has established its own web page where you can find much information about the Legion.

Through the computer you can locate the address of National Headquarters and see a map of their locations in Indianapolis and Washington.

You can see news releases, articles from the American Legion Magazine, Emblem sales items and much more information and the Legions web pages are updated as soon as the information changes. There are visual images, such as clip art you can download or send to your printer.

You can learn of our work with Gulf War veterans and the Flag protection amendment. Our page also has information about the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion.

You have references and links to government information such as benefits via the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The home page is not only to be read you can send messages via the guest registry or e-mail. National can be reached with your questions, comments or concerns and a response, when required, can be returned quickly. Not only do save the cost of a stamp, but, also, you will probably have an answer days sooner than by snail mail. In addition to e-mailing National Headquarters, there are also lists of other offices with similar computer capabilities, such as Department Adjutants and Service Officers. At present there are only a few Departments with there own web sites, but when a Department site is found it will be included along with their e-mail address.

The American Legion will not abandon the printed page as a source of information but because of its speed and efficiency, the Internet is here to stay, and those Legionnaires with access to computers should take advantage of the wealth of information available on the Internet from National Headquarters. The American Legion's World Wide Web address is:
http://www.Legion.org

The American Legion's e-mail address is: tal@Legion.org

The Department of Mexico's web page is: http://www.amlegion-mexico.org

November Column

Legionnaires,

Just a short note.

At this writing we have already had our fall meeting in Antigua Guatemala. We had an interesting meeting with John Hayes giving a very detailed report from the National level (See minutes of meeting.)

Vice Commander Bill Shetz and his lovely wife invited me out to dinner. We had a good talk. Vice Commander Shetz is busy working on getting members from South America and possibly starting a post. He has gotten a poster in all the Embassies to let veterans know that The American Legion is here to serve them.

I have met Bill for the first time, and was very favorably impressed with his knowledge and fervor in favor of The Legion.

We will repeat our meeting in March in Antigua. We met at a restaurant of a friend of Bill’s and he went out of his way to be of service to us.

My thanks to Bill. and to all the members of Post GT 02.

Fellow comrades,

As you read this we will have returned from the National Convention that was held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The web master will undoubtedly be posting all the latest news.

I thank you for making it possible for me to represent you and the opportunity of being able to see and hear the Mormon Tabernacle choir and orchestra, President Bush, Secretary, Department of Defense Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Rice, Maj. Gen. Patrick H. Brady, US army (Ret.) Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, LTG. Hal Moore (Ret) U.S. Army and Joe Galloway who co-authored the book “We were soldiers, and young.” And many other dignitaries.

There was a very important message that has to be brought to the attention of all the Posts in the American Legion.

NATIONAL DUES WILL BE RAISED.
This will of course affect us; we are presently paying $20 of which $9.00 goes to National, and $11.00 to Department. National now has voted to raise their share on Jan. 8, 2007 to $13.50 USD. As of that date the Department will get to keep only $6.50 USD. This is because our dues are set at a total of$20.00 USD. The point here is that mail takes so long to reach the States that the Department will be charged $13.50 USD for any cards sent to the Department after Nov. 15 or 20th.

And so I ask you, if you can, please pay your dues before the Nov. dates.

If you must pay after this date, Please, add a $4.50 “donation” to your check or to your cash payment, this will help the Department to not take a hit.

Don’t forget, we need to get new members and retain the membership we have, also turn in your post transcripts in a timely manner do not wait to get a stack of them together. The fate of our Department depends on it!

Talking about new members, congratulations to Judge Advocate Art Herbruger of GT 01. I understand he has recruited 90 new members, all of whom are on active duty.

My comrades,

As some of you may already know, I’ve been elected Commander of The Department of Mexico. (Through no fault of my own.) All kidding aside, I would like to thank the Members of The Department of Mexico Executive Committee for their vote of confidence, I appreciate the opportunity to serve in the highest Office one can be elected to in the Department. I have always done the best job that I could possibly do in every office I’ve held, this, with the help of my Adjutant, Royce Wheeler and the Executive Committee, will not be any different. This is my first column as your Commander, and if you want to know more about me please check out my Bio. The first thing on my plate, is going to the National Convention in Salt Lake City as your representative, I hope that we can have a large group of our members present as Delegates, alternate Delegates as well as those who come to join in on the activities of the Convention.

If you need, or want, to contact me, my personal E-Mail is:chicagoslim2000@yahoo.com or call my home Post in Chapala, Jalisco. You can get the dialing information from our web page.
